Roll up your Sleeves: It's Flu Season Again!
The coming of fall brings with it flu season. It is for this reason that a flu vaccine campaign has been started at Bilkent. All staff and students can get their shots at the Health Centers on East and Main campus. If you have Acıbadem Insurance, they will pay 70 percent of the costs.
The following people are at an increased risk for complications from the flu and should be vaccinated each year:
- Adults aged 65 or older.
- All children aged 6-59 months.
- Adults and children who have chronic lung disease (like asthma), or heart disease.
- Adults and children who have received medical care in the PAST YEAR for a chronic metabolic disease (such as diabetes mellitus), kidney disease, sickle cell disease, or other hemoglobin problems (including severe anemia).
- Adults and children whose immune systems are compromised by diseases such as human immunodeficiency virus, or are undergoing medical care, including chemotherapy.
- Children aged 6 months to 18 years who are on long-term aspirin therapy are at risk for developing Reye's Syndrome following the flu.
Those who are allergic to eggs (used in making the vaccine) or other contents of the vaccine, who are currently very ill with a high fever, or who have had a severe reaction to the flu shot in the past should not be vaccinated.
