Ex Libris: News from the Library

This year, March 26-30 will mark the 48th annual Library Week in Turkey, when we celebrate the role of libraries and librarians in our professional and personal lives. Bilkent University Library will be hosting a series of cultural activities during that week, and we will be announcing these events in detail nearer the time. However, we have already launched one activity: a writing competition open to all undergraduate students. Submissions for this competition, which may be in either Turkish or English and must be around 1,000-1,500 words in length, can be either fiction or non-fictional essays on the theme "The Library." Possible individual topics might include libraries of the future, or accessing and sharing information, or globalization and libraries. The deadline for submission is March 16, 2012. The writer of the winning entry, to be announced on March 30, will be awarded a 100TL Dost gift token. For more details about the competition and how to enter, please see our website or contact us at kutuphanehaftasi@bilkent.edu.tr. We wish all competitors good luck!

Many Bilkent students have had experience using Turnitin, the plagiarism detection program, as part of their regular courses. However, you might be interested to know that it is not only students who are accused of plagiarizing. Instructors and researchers can also be found guilty of copying another person's words or ideas! Recently, TÜBİTAK ULAKBİM has provided Turkish universities with access to the iThenticate program, which is intended to detect and prevent plagiarism within academia and is produced by the same company that designed Turnitin. iThenticate compares submitted papers with a database of more than 116 million scholarly articles and reviews from top academic publishers as well as over 20 billion web pages, and attempts to identify the amount of "similarity" between them. This program is therefore an excellent tool for Bilkent faculty members to use for checking their own work before submitting it for publication, and safeguarding their existing research in the future.
