BSO Concert Honors the Memory of İhsan Doğramacı
The Bilkent Symphony Orchestra concert on February 25 was dedicated to Professor İhsan Doğramacı, the founder of Bilkent University, and a lifelong music-lover, on the second anniversary of his death. The audience paid heartfelt tribute to his memory and celebrated his everlasting legacy once again.
The concert began with a stirring performance of the “Leonore” Overture No. 3, Op. 72b, of Ludwig van Beethoven. This well-known classic of the symphonic repertoire was followed by a less familiar piece, Alexander Glazunov's Concerto for Violin in A minor, Op. 82. Violinist Sasha Rozhdestvensky, a scion of one of Russia's greatest musical families, joined the Bilkent Symphony Orchestra as soloist, bringing an authentic interpretive touch and timbre to a work he has recorded.
For the final piece on the program, Artun Hoinic, guest conductor for the concert, led the BSO in the Symphony No.1 in F minor, Op. 10, by Dmitri Shostakovich, a very early work of the great Russian master and one of the more frequently performed twentieth-century symphonies. The orchestra gave a sonorous reading of the piece under the baton of the young conductor -- who, it should be mentioned, is a 2007 graduate of Bilkent's Faculty of Music and Performing Arts. No doubt Professor Doğramacı would have been pleased.
