Governor of the Central Bank Discusses Turkey and the Global Economic Crisis
Dr. Erdem Başçı, Governor of the Central Bank of Turkey, spoke at Bilkent University on the evening of October 12. A large audience took the opportunity to hear what Dr. Başçı, the most important monetary authority in the country, had to say about the post-global monetary policies of the Central Bank following the global economic crisis.
Assoc. Prof. Bilin Neyaptı of the Department of Economics and Ömer Karaduman of the Bilkent Economics Research Community (BERC) gave brief opening remarks and introduced Dr. Başçı. He began his talk by noting that he had planned to give a formal presentation on the state of the monetary climate in Turkey, but seeing so many Bilkent students and staff reminded him of his own student days, including his MBA and PhD studies at Bilkent.

Ready to Study Abroad?
The Student Exchange Program gives students the opportunity to study abroad. The application process for student exchanges during the next academic year, 2012-2013, has now started. Here is your chance to experience a different culture.
Students currently in their third or fourth registration semester, who have a minimum CGPA of 3.00 and a TOEFL score, are eligible to apply for the program.
Applicants must submit a CV, a statement of purpose and their TOEFL score sheet along with the application form to the Office of International Exchange Programs. The application deadline is December 2, 2011.
Qualifying students will be selected for initial interviews, which will take place on December 9, 12 and 13. Successful candidates will be announced on December 15.

Art and Science: Two Wings on Which We Will Fly into the Future
The start to this year's monthly faculty seminars of the Faculty of Science came on Wednesday, October 12, with a talk by Prof. Talât Halman, the dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Letters and the founder of the Department of Turkish Literature. A varied audience of scientists, engineers, social scientists, historians, scholars and students filled Mithat Çoruh Auditorium to hear Prof. Halman speak on the subject of "Science and Art."
Since fall 2008, the Faculty of Science has been holding seminars on the first Wednesday of every month. The seminars are intended to bring researchers and students from different scientific disciplines together to discuss recent developments and advances in the sciences. A distinguished scholar of the arts and letters, as well as a world-renowned literary man and poet, Prof. Halman thus seemed an unusual choice of guest speaker at first glance.

TDP Volunteers Begin a New Semester of Community Service
We're only a few weeks into the new academic year, but the Social Awareness Projects (TDP/Toplumsal Duyarlılık Projeleri) student organization has plunged right in, with a full schedule of events to prepare its volunteers for community service work this semester. The numerous TDP projects, all intended to advance social awareness and provide help for those in need, serve various groups in the community. In its 12th year, the organization encourages all Bilkenters to join the TDP family and become part of its endeavor for a better society.
On September 27-28, TDP held its first meeting this semester, at which new members learned about TDP's ongoing community service projects. On October 2, TDP held a picnic at Mavi Göl Park to foster camaraderie among its members. A total of 150 volunteers who participate in various TDP projects came to enjoy a day outdoors, complete with a barbecue, matches and games, and live music.
