Tips for a Successful Interview

Following its first workshop, on writing an effective CV, the Brand Club last week presented a second workshop conducted by American Advisors providing students with information that will help them when applying for a job or a graduate degree. On Wednesday, November 28, Daniel Chatham talked about the secrets to a successful job interview.

Mr. Chatham explained in detail what must be done to prepare and practice for an interview. He talked about the most common areas that a candidate should expect to be asked about and cautioned that in preparing for an interview, candidates should not forget to reread their own resumes.

The speaker also emphasized the importance of rereading the job description, so that a candidate is able to point out how his or her qualifications match the description's requirements. Other tips included maintaining a positive attitude about oneself, showing enthusiasm about the job and drawing attention to one's strong points in order to deflect notice from any weak areas in a resume.

Finally, Mr. Chatham gave a bonus tip, noting the benefits of having a LinkedIn account in terms of being able to go to an interview with some background information about the hiring company. He concluded his discussion by answering students' questions.
