Bilkent Hosts Model UN Conference
Organized by the Bilkent MUN Society, MUNBU 2013 (Model United Nations of Bilkent University) took place January 29-February 1. Society members put in eight months of hard work preparing for the event, which was the first MUN conference to be hosted by Bilkent University.
Bilkent MUN Society President Eda Emil served as secretary general of MUNBU 2013.
MUN is a simulation of the United Nations, where global economic, social, environmental and political issues are discussed and solutions are proposed by participating "delegates." All MUN conferences follow the same procedural rules as the UN, including the dress code.
MUNBU 2013 attracted the participation of 187 delegates, including international attendees. For four days, from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m., delegates met to discuss global issues in six committees: DISEC (Disarmament and International Security Committee), NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization), ICJ (International Court of Justice), UNHCR (United Nations Office of the High Commissioner of Refugees), G20 (Group of 20) and ECOSOC (UN Economic and Social Council). Each evening after the sessions, participants had the opportunity to enjoy getting better acquainted at the social events planned by the organizers.
Bilkent MUN Society members and visiting delegates expressed satisfaction with MUNBU 2013, calling it a huge success that represented the university in the best possible way.
