Goodbye, Professor Tansel

Prof. Barbaros Tansel, faculty member and former chair of the Department of Industrial Engineering, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, January 3. His untimely death was a great shock to all of his family members, students and colleagues, and to the entire Bilkent family.

A highly respected researcher and academician in his field, Prof. Tansel completed his high school education at Robert College and graduated from the Middle East Technical University Department of Industrial Engineering in 1974. He received his master's and doctoral degrees from the University of Florida Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering in 1976 and 1979.

Prof. İnalcık's Book on Bursa Launched

Mayor Recep Altepe of the Bursa Metropolitan Municipality was on campus Tuesday, January 15 for the launch of Prof. Halil İnalcık's book on the history of the city of Bursa, entitled "Bursa Araştırmaları."

Held in the Halil İnalcık Center for Ottoman Studies, the event comprised a panel at which Rector Abdullah Atalar, Mayor Altepe and Prof. İnalcık spoke to a diverse audience. Including Prof. İnalcık's students, old and new, members of the mayor's entourage and the history department, and a considerable group from the national press, the attendees filled the room to its limit, with latecomers standing in the hallway to hear Prof. İnalcık speak about the history of Bursa in particular and about historical scholarship in general.

Graphic Design Graduate Takes Nasreddin Hoca to Bologna

Department of Graphic Design graduate (2012) Meltem Şahin's illustrations for a book of Nasreddin Hoca stories, which she completed in the fourth-year graphic design studio, have been selected for the 2013 Bologna Children's Book Fair Illustrators Exhibition.

Held since 1963, the book fair is the world's premier event dedicated to the children's publishing and multimedia industry. The Illustrators Exhibition, in which Meltem's works will be included, is the largest and most prestigious international display of the most innovative trends in children's illustration and thus a unique opportunity for illustrators from all over the world to display their talent to industry representatives.

This year, only 70 illustrators from among 3,000 applicants from many nations were selected by a jury consisting of publishers, artists and museum directors. Meltem is the only Turkish illustrator on the list. Her illustrations will also be published in the Annual, a reference tool that publishers use year round, and will be part of traveling shows in several countries, including Japan.

Bilkent Hosts Model UN Conference

Organized by the Bilkent MUN Society, MUNBU 2013 (Model United Nations of Bilkent University) took place January 29-February 1. Society members put in eight months of hard work preparing for the event, which was the first MUN conference to be hosted by Bilkent University.
