Bilkent’s Founder Turns 87
Professor İhsan Doğramacı, the founder of many esteemed institutions, including Bilkent and Hacettepe Universities, turns 87 on April 3, 2002. We wish Hocabey many happy returns on his birthday.
A ceremony will be held on April 3, at the Bilkent University Concert Hall on the occasion of the bestowal of the “İhsan Doğramacı Prize for International Relations for Peace” to Dr. Arne Olav Brundtland from Norway.
This Award has been established in the name of the Founder and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Bilkent University, Prof. Dr. İhsan Doğramacı, and will be given every other year to internationally recognized prominent personalities.
In accordance with the statutes of the Award, Dr. Brundtland was selected among candidates who have made scholarly contributions to the development and improvement of international relations and have promoted rapprochment and friendship between nations. A jury, composed of seven members from the Foreign Policy Institute and Bilkent University, made the selection.
Dr. Brundtland is a leading Norwegian scholar in international relations and has made significant contributions to world peace through long years of research, teaching and advising on security, defense and arms control issues.
Chess Award Received by CTP Instructor
Mr. Halil Özmen, an Instructor in the Computer Technology and Programming department, received a second place award in the Ankara City Chess Championship which was held on March 4 - 10.
Mr. Özmen had 5 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss. The championship was played in a 7 round Swiss style system. 32 players participated in this year’s championship; the youngest was 10 years old, and the oldest 70.

Writing Across Bilkent: Faculty Spotlight
In order to share information about the way Bilkent faculty members use writing in their classrooms, the Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC) Project, in cooperation with Bilkent News, has established a series of articles called “Writing Across Bilkent.” Our second faculty spotlight in this series describes some of the short writing-to-learn activities used by Dr. Eileen T. Lundy, who has been teaching in the American Culture and Literature Department since 2000.
Each week Dr. Lundy’s students write short responses in class based on that day’s or week’s assigned reading. These responses can ask students 1) to select an important passage or quotation and then respond to it in some way or 2) to respond to open-ended questions or short readings based on concepts being studied. Dr. Eken Invited as Keynote Speaker
Dr. Ali Nihat Eken of the School of Applied Languages has been invited to be a keynote speaker at the First International Conference held by the Republic of Yemen University of Hodeidah Faculty of Education. The conference is entitled: “Old Borders, Fresh Crossing: Thinking-Rethinking ELT in Arabia Felix”,
March 30 - April 2.
Dr. Eken’s address “Color Your Lessons With Films” is based on a project carried out with Media Studies students in the Bilkent University School of Applied Languages. This 60-minute presentation will not only show how films were used in the Media course, but will also show photographs of Bilkent University students performing activities and provide numerous examples of Bilkent students’ work accomplished during the course.
