Helping Ankara’s Senior Citizens

A group of volunteers from Bilkent University have been organizing several projects under the name Toplumsal Duyarlılık Projeleri (TDP), which is a project run by Bilkent volunteer students since 2000. The TDP allows students to volunteer in several activities such as tutoring elementary school students in underprivileged areas, teaching sports, art, and computer classes, or visiting elderly people in retirement homes.

Since the beginning of this semester volunteers for TDP have been visiting retirement homes in different parts of Ankara, with the goal of communicating with senior citizens, thereby making them feel less neglected or abandoned. Volunteers have visited the Seyranbağları Retirement Home three times so far; their most recent visit was to the Ümitköy Retirement Center on November 22, along with the Bilkent Music Club and Bilkent Classical Turkish Music Chorus. The chorus gave a concert which was warmly received. At the end of the visit, it was easy to see the joy in the eyes of the audience. The TDP volunteers are now planning a new campaign to help meet the needs of the retirement homes’ residents. To be a volunteer or to get further information about the campaign or other projects you can contact TDP at tdp@bilkent.edu.tr or at 290-2157, 4728 and 4645.

IAED Student Receives Award

A fourth year student from the Interior Architecture and Environmental Design Department, Onur Karlıdağ, received a first place award by the Foundation of Architecture, in the 3rd International Architecture School, for a project called Tema Parkı. The goal of this project was to restore a park with a sculpture gallery, and a café by the sea.
Karlıdağ said: “I believe this is Bilkent’s achievement as well as mine; for a student to take first place in an interior architecture contest arranged primarily for architects, shows the high level of education here at Bilkent.”
