Suna Korad 1935-2003
Suna Korad, a gifted soprano dedicated to education, was a source of inspiration for the Bilkent community, especially to the members of the Faculty of Music and Performing Arts. Unfortunately, last week Ms. Korad passed away; two years ago she had a heart attack, and since that time had suffered from high blood pressure.
Ms. Korad joined Bilkent as a full time faculty member in 1996, and held the title of “State Artist” in Turkey.
Bilkent To Host Young Chefs Competition
The Bailliage de Turquie (Turkish Chapter) of the world renowned “Confrérie de la Chaine des Rotisseurs” is holding a competition for young Turkish chefs. This is the seventh time that the event has been held, and the first time in Ankara (all the previous competitions were held in İstanbul). Because of the recognition of the Ankara Branch last October, Bilkent University’s School of Tourism and Hotel Management has been selected to host this prestigious competition.
The worldwide organization “La Confrerie de la Chaine des Rotisseurs” was founded in 1248 as a guild. Guilds in those days were organizations, like unions, consisting of tradesmen; they regulated such important aspects of their trade as education, training and certification. They oversaw apprenticeship training and would guide the apprentice’s path through the ranks. Unfortunately, many of the French guilds disappeared after the French Revolution of 1789. University of Rome Bestows Honorary Degree Upon Prof. İhsan Doğramacı
The University of Rome, also known as “La Sapienza” (which means “Knowledge”), has decided to bestow an Honorary Doctorate on Professor İhsan Doğramacı on March 28, 2003. La Sapienza was founded in 1303 by Pope Boniface VIII, making it one of the oldest centers of higher education in Europe; today, over 150,000 students are enrolled in the university.
Professor Doğramacı, a pediatrician by profession, in addition to being an educator, was nominated for this award by members of the departments of Obstetrics and Gynecology and of Pediatrics and Child Health of La Sapienza. The decision to grant the degree followed a lengthy procedure involving investigations by the University of Rome’s academic senate, the Italian Ministry of Education, and the Italian Embassy in Ankara. At the ceremony, which will be attended by the rector and two pro-rectors of the University of Rome, as well as members of the academic senate and the dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery, Professor Doğramacı will make an acceptance speech in Italian.
