Bilkent’s Founder Hosts
Reception to Celebrate New Semester
This past Saturday, September 16th, Bilkent students and faculty members gathered at the
residence of Prof. İhsan Doğramacı, founder of Bilkent University and Chairman of the
Board of Trustees, for an outdoor reception.
Prof.
Doğramacı and Ms. Ayser Doğramacı, to celebrate the beginning of the University's fall
‘06 semester, hosted the reception.
Throughout the reception, students had the opportunity to speak one-on-one with Prof.
Doğramacı about their educational interests and goals as well as, Bilkent itself, the
academic world and other topics. After making a welcome speech to the guests, Prof.
Doğramacı answered several questions from the students about their life at Bilkent.The
event, which began at 11 a.m. and lasted until 2 p.m., included a barbecue lunch as well
as an informal jazz concert by faculty member Janusz Szprot. The sunny, early fall day
added to everyone's enjoyment.

Prof. Aytür Accolades
Prof. Orhan Aytür, from the
Electrical and Electronics Department, won numerous awards for his entries in the Marmara
Festival’s underwater photography competitions: the Sixth International Underwater
Photo/Video Festival held in İstanbul from September 9-10, and the Thirteenth ‘Living
Marmara’ Diving contest held on September 9.
The festival, organized by the Caddebostan Scuba Diver's Sport Club, included a Marmara
Diving Photo competition.
Entries in this division were submitted photos taken by contestants during two dives at
Yassıada in the Marmara Sea on September 9th. Prof. Aytür won first prize in the Wide
Angle Film and Macro Film categories for his photos. In addition, Prof. Aytür, who placed
third in three other categories, took the prize for the "Best National" title in
the Photo Submission division of the International Underwater Photo/Video Festival. For

Prof. Halman Honored by Ankara University and Published in the
US
Prof.
Talat Halman, Dean of Faculty of Humanities and Letters, has recently been honored for his
contributions to Turkish literature. On June 13th, at a ceremony attended by Ahmet Necdet
Sezer, President of the Republic of Turkey, Ankara University awarded Prof. Halman a
doctorate honoris causa "in recognition of his lifelong contributions to Turkish
literature and culture." In an outstanding example of such contributions to Turkish
literature and culture, the Syracuse University Press has just published Halman's new
anthology of modern Turkish poetry in the US.
Halman's
anthology, A Brave New Quest: 100 Modern Turkish Poems, contains a selection of one
hundred 20th century poems by major Turkish poets. The anthology includes work by Nazım
Hikmet, Necip Fazıl Kısakürek, Ahmet Muhip Dıranas, Cahit Sıtkı Tarancı, Fazıl
Hüsnü Dağlarca, Orhan Veli Kanık, Oktay Rıfat, Melih Cevdet Anday, Behçet Necatigil,
İhan Berk, Attila İlhan, and many others. Talat Halman, who also wrote a brief
introduction on modern Turkish poetry for the anthology, translated all selections into
English. The associate editor is Dr. Jayne L. Warner. A Brave New Quest features the best
of 20th century Turkish verse in faithful, smooth, and poetic versions.
THM Department Chair
Elected to Lead EuroCHRIE
During
the annual conference of the International Council on Hotel, Restaurant &
Institutional Education (I-CHRIE), held in Arlington, Virginia, USA from July 26-29, 2006,
the Tourism and Hotel Management Department's Chair, M. Teoman Alemdar, was elected to
serve as the EuroCHRIE President for a one-year period.
The EuroCHRIE is the European Chapter of I-CHRIE, the global leader in hospitality and
tourism education and research. I-CHRIE is a nonprofit organization representing
hospitality professionals and academia worldwide with a membership body of more than one
thousand. Members of EuroCHRIE meet once a year every fall. Bilkent University has hosted
past conferences in 1997 and 2004. The EuroCHRIE Conference 2006, organized by the
University of Aegean, is centered on the theme: "In Search of Excellence for
Tomorrow's Tourism, Travel and Hospitality." The conference will be held in
Thessaloniki, Greece from October 25-28, 2006. M. Teoman Alemdar will be serving as the
14th President of the EuroCHRIE Federation.
