TDP’s First Meeting of the Academic Year Held, New Volunteers Welcomed

tdp

Bilkent's Community Projects/Toplumsal Duyarlılık Projeleri (TDP) is ready for the new semester. Many Bilkent students are familiar with the work of TDP, which is carried out by student volunteers and supported by other organizations such as Toplum Gönüllüleri Vakfı (TOG) and Uygar Görme Engelliler Derneği.

These organizations allow students to volunteer in several activities, such as tutoring elementary school students in underprivileged areas, teaching sports, art, and computer classes, or visiting senior citizens in retirement homes.

TDP met with new members at an introductory meeting on Tuesday, September 23. Ayşin Gürbüz, Coordinator, Dean of Students, gave the opening speech and discussed how social projects started at Bilkent University. She explained that all the projects are accomplished by volunteer students. They create their own projects, start them up, improve upon them and work in providing solutions to, or raising awareness of social problems. Ms. Gürbüz thanked volunteers and addressed new volunteers by saying “All people have something to bring in respect to their ability.” Then, eleven different projects were introduced, and new members started their lives as Bilkent University volunteers.

Be part of the voluntary activities at Bilkent.

Prominent modern Turkish poet, Asaf Hâlet Çelebi, will be commemorated by Bilkent's Center for Turkish Literature on the 50th anniversary of his passing. As the title “A Surrealist Mevlevi” indicates, Çelebi's poetry, both modern and traditional, is a synthesis of East and West, and is unique in this sense.

Several M.A. students from the Department of Turkish Literature will read Çelebi's poems.
