Dance Classes at Bilkent
How would you like to start learning Argentine tango and salsa right here on campus at Bilkent? After all, dancing is a great way to escape from the stresses of everyday life and to socialize with others in a natural way. Bilkent University is offering Argentine tango and salsa dance classes this semester. The classes begin Tuesday, February 21, and will continue until the end of the semester. They are being taught by Barbaros Tansel, a professor in the Department of Industrial Engineering and also an avid dancer. Prof. Tansel will be assisted by Sanem Subaygil, a well-known ballet dancer at the Turkish State Opera and Ballet Ensemble.
Prof. Tansel came to Bilkent in 1991 as a faculty member in the Department of Industrial Engineering and began teaching dance classes as a service to the Bilkent community. What started out as a class of 15 students in 1991 has grown in size to 150.
The dance classes will be meeting every Tuesday beginning February 21. Salsa will be taught from 6:40 to 7:30 p.m., and Argentine tango from 7:40 to 8:30 p.m. All classes will be held at the aerobics studio in the Main Sports Hall (the building next to the bookstore), and are open to students, employees, their spouses and Bilkent alumni. There is a quota of 40 males and 40 females for each of the classes. It is possible to sign up either with or without a partner. Registration is now underway at the Dormitories Sports Hall (ext.1993). The fee is 110 TL. Both courses are designed for beginners' level students, but intermediate level students are also welcome. Steps for beginners and intermediate students will be taught separately. Further information can be obtained by sending an email to barbaros@bilkent.edu.tr or by contacting the Sports Center at ext. 1993.
