Murat Nemet-Nejat to Lecture on Modern Turkish Poetry
US translator Murat Nemet-Nejat will give a lecture (in Turkish) on modern Turkish poetry and the art of translation on Thursday, February 23 in room A-130, Faculty of Economics, Administrative, and Social Sciences, at 5 p.m. The title of the lecture is "Eda: Modern Türk Şiiri Üzerine Düşünceler." The event is organized by the Bilkent Center for Turkish Literature, and is open to the public.
Mr. Nemet-Nejat was born in Istanbul to Iranian parents, graduated from Robert College, and has been active in the United States since the late 1950s. A poet who writes exclusively in English, he has published his original poems in his books entitled "The Bridge" and "The Spiritual Life of Replicants." He is also the author/translator of "Eda: An Anthology of Contemporary Turkish Poetry." A well-known translator of modern Turkish poetry into English, his books include "I, Orhan Veli," Ece Ayhan's "The Blind Cat Black and Orthodoxies" and Seyhan Erözçelik's "Rosestrikes and Coffee Grinds." His translation of Birhan Keskin's "Y'ol" is scheduled to be published in 2012. Mr. Nemet-Nejat is an active member of the American Pen Center's Translation Committee. His literary essays have appeared in various volumes.
