Campus Goes Dark for Earth Hour 2012

Earth Hour, a global event to raise awareness of climate change, is held every year on the last Saturday in March. Millions join in the event by turning off their lights, and many iconic landmarks also go dark to promote Earth Hour.

On March 31 from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m., Bilkent University participated in Earth Hour for the second time, on the initiative of the Bilkent Astronomy Society and the Bilkent Environment and Ecology Society. Most of the lights throughout the university campus were turned off, and many individual Bilkenters supported the event by turning off their own lights. Plus, a skywatching party was held on Main Campus, where those who attended could enjoy looking at the stars through a telescope thanks to the "good seeing" provided by the low level of light.

However, Earth Hour is only a symbolic act that reminds us about the fragility of the Earth. Will you go beyond the Hour, and take more action for the sake of our planet?
