"Street Lamp Project" Helps Today's Saplings Grow into Tomorrow's Trees
The purpose of the TDP (Toplumsal Duyarlılık Projeleri - Social Awareness Projects) "Sokak Lambası Projesi" (SLP) is to raise awareness about the importance of education among children who begin working while still in school, and help them to develop a sense of belonging. In addition, SLP volunteers try to be role models for children who may lack them in their family environments.
Project volunteers organize an activity each Sunday, designed to be both educational and entertaining. It's different every week, with different volunteers in charge, but is always something in which the children can take an active part, express their identities, use their creativity and work as a group.
For example, on April 22, Earth Day, SLP volunteers took the children to a village near Ayaş to plant saplings. They learned about protecting nature and also created something of their own, through which their names will be remembered.
SLP plans to cooperate with a different school next semester and to be even more effective by helping a wider range of children.
