To Our Readers

Once again it is time for Bilkent News to say good-bye until next year. The Editorial Board would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our readers for their support and contributions throughout this past academic year. To those returning next year, we look forward to seeing and hearing from you again; to those graduating, best of luck in your future endeavors.
Along with this, the Bilkent News would like to take this opportunity to say farewell to several of our staff. Dr. Mathew Gumpert, has served as a Board Member for the past 3 years, contributing much needed insight into the development of the paper. Dr. Gumpert will be leaving Bilkent at the end of this year. We at the Bilkent News would like to wish Dr. Gumpert much success in his future endeavors. Student columnists, Efe Peker and Sibel Muradoğlu, will be graduating this semester, so will no longer be with us. Good luck and happiness in your future, and thanks for all of your great articles! Finally, after 3 years, Doug Willmann will be moving on. As the longest lasting Executive Editor of the newspaper to date, we would like to thank Mr. Willmann for all of his hard work and dedication.

Industrial Engineering Students to Compete in Project Fair


The Industrial Engineering Project Fair and Competition will take place at Bilkent on Friday, May 14, with the participation of 15 Senior Design Projects.
All fourth year students in IE are required to develop and implement a
new system in cooperation with various major companies. These projects also introduce students to the issues faced by the Turkish Industrial sector. The fair, organized by Prof. İhsan Sabuncuoğlu and Asst. Prof. Bahar Yetiş Kara, will include presentations of projects, as well as a concert and a reception.
The fair will be held at the Mithat Çoruh Auditorium between 1 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Everybody is welcome to attend.

Board of Trustees Meets

The Board of Trustees of Bilkent University met last Saturday, presided by Professor İhsan Doğramacı. At the meeting eight new members of the Trustees were introduced: Prof. Enver Hasanoğlu - Former Rector of Gazi University, Prof. Ergün Toğrol - Former Rector of Boğaziçi University, Prof. Turgay Coşkun - Hacettepe University, Prof. Feyza Erkan Krause - İstanbul University, Prof. Gülsev Kale -Hacettepe University, Prof. Şencan Özme - Hacettepe University, Prof. Muhsin Saraçlar - Hacettepe University, Prof. Ergül Tunçbilek - Hacettepe University.
The meeting included presentations by the TDP (Toplumsal Duyarlılık Projeleri), and Professors Salim Çıracı and Ekmel Özbay on the Nanotechnology Center.
Finally, the Trustees set the new tuition for the upcoming academic year. For students currently enrolled in Bilkent, the tuition (in dollars) will be increased by 5%. The last time such an increase took place was back in 2001. As for newly incoming students who will enroll in Bilkent for the first time in September 2004, their tuition will be $7750 per academic year.



Graduation Ball Coming Up!

The Graduation Ball will be held June 2-3, 2004 at the Bilkent Hotel, Sakarya Ballroom, at 8 p.m., and will feature a live concert by Turkish pop singer Işın Karaca.
On Wednesday, June 2, 2004:

FEASS, FBA, FMPA, FS, SATM,VSTHS
On Thursday, June 3, 2004:

FADA, FE, FHL, SAL, VSCTOM and BUSEL will be together.
Ticket price is 90 million TL. per person until May 14, and 100 million TL. as of May 17. Tickets will be available at the Alumni Office in the Student Council Building. For further information please contact the Alumni Office at ext. 2236.



International Congress Held in Honor of Professor Halil İnalcık at Harvard University

"In Honor of Professor İnalcık: Methods and Sources in Ottoman Studies", a conference cosponsored by the Centers for Middle Eastern Study at Harvard University and the University of Chicago, was held at Harvard University from Friday, April 30 to Sunday, May 2, 2004.
"Methods and Sources of Ottoman Studies" is a celebration of Professor İnalcık's extraordinary contributions to Ottoman economic, social and institutional history.
Professor İnalcık is responsible for teaching some of today's most prominent Ottoman History scholars whom he taught at Bilkent University, Ankara University, the University of Chicago, Columbia University, Princeton University and the University of Pennsylvania.
Harvard University and the University of Chicago together celebrated the important place Professor Inalcık holds in his field, while critically reflecting upon the current state of Ottoman Studies and identifying new lines of inquiry for future research. Finally his former students gave papers which focused on methodological and conceptual aspects of Professor İnalcık's work.
