Prof. İhsan Doğramacı’s 95th Birthday Commemorated

Prof. İhsan Doğramacı, founder of Bilkent University, was commemorated on April 3, on the occasion of his 95th birthday. The commemoration began with the renaming ceremony of the boulevard formerly known as Bilkent 1st Street as İhsan Doğramacı Boulevard. The ceremony recognized his efforts in transforming the Bilkent district into a center of arts and science.

The renaming ceremony took place at the East Campus Entrance #2 near the dormitory area. Members of the Doğramacı family, a large group of the Bilkent community, the Minister of Defense Vecdi Gönül, President of the Higher Education Council Yusuf Ziya Özcan, Member of Parliament Necati Çetinkaya, and Deputy Mayor of Ankara Metropolitan Municipality Ali Gökşin all attended.

A special concert from the Bilkent Symphony Orchestra in memory of Prof. İhsan Doğramacı’s 95th birthday  was held on the same day at 8 p.m. at the Bilkent Concert Hall. Klaus Weise conducted the evening performance, which featured soloists Gülsin Onay and Francesco Libetta.

Under the baton of maestro Weise, the Bilkent Symphony Orchestra presented Mozart's Piano Concerto for Two Pianos No.10 and Tchaikovsky's Symphony No.6 "Pathetique" during the concert. Pianist Gülsin Onay also performed Chopin's Polonaise Opus 53, a favorite piece of Prof. İhsan Doğramacı.

Also last week, on the occasion of the 40th day after the burial of our founder, İhsan Doğramacı, Mevlit was recited at the Doğramacızade Ali Paşa Mosque on Friday, April 9.
