Prof. İhsan Doğramacı’s 95th Birthday Commemorated

Prof. İhsan Doğramacı, founder of Bilkent University, was commemorated on April 3, on the occasion of his 95th birthday. The commemoration began with the renaming ceremony of the boulevard formerly known as Bilkent 1st Street as İhsan Doğramacı Boulevard. The ceremony recognized his efforts in transforming the Bilkent district into a center of arts and science.

The renaming ceremony took place at the East Campus Entrance #2 near the dormitory area. Members of the Doğramacı family, a large group of the Bilkent community, the Minister of Defense Vecdi Gönül, President of the Higher Education Council Yusuf Ziya Özcan, Member of Parliament Necati Çetinkaya, and Deputy Mayor of Ankara Metropolitan Municipality Ali Gökşin all attended.

A special concert from the Bilkent Symphony Orchestra in memory of Prof. İhsan Doğramacı’s 95th birthday  was held on the same day at 8 p.m. at the Bilkent Concert Hall. Klaus Weise conducted the evening performance, which featured soloists Gülsin Onay and Francesco Libetta.

Under the baton of maestro Weise, the Bilkent Symphony Orchestra presented Mozart's Piano Concerto for Two Pianos No.10 and Tchaikovsky's Symphony No.6 "Pathetique" during the concert. Pianist Gülsin Onay also performed Chopin's Polonaise Opus 53, a favorite piece of Prof. İhsan Doğramacı.

Also last week, on the occasion of the 40th day after the burial of our founder, İhsan Doğramacı, Mevlit was recited at the Doğramacızade Ali Paşa Mosque on Friday, April 9.

GRA Students Awarded by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism

Aria Cem Yılmaz and Ali Metehan Erdem, second-year students from the Department of Graphic Design, won honorable mention in the poster competition held by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism to promote “Love of Reading and Libraries” (Okuma Sevgisi ve Kütüphane). Yılmaz and Erdem received their award from Ertuğrul Günay, the Minister of Culture and Tourism, on March 29 in a ceremony held at the National Library.

Spring Fest Concerts

Spring Fest

Spring Fest 2010 will take place from Thursday, April 29 to Saturday, May 1. The evening concerts, arranged by the Spring Fest Organization Committee, will be held at the ODEON, on April 29 and 30. Tickets will be required. Note that the concerts are only for Bilkent University students, personnel and alumni.

Please note that student ID cards must be presented when purchasing tickets. Each student may only purchase one ticket and it is not possible to buy group tickets. Please remember that at the entrance to the concert each student will need to show their student ID with their ticket, otherwise they will not be allowed entrance.

Seats will be allocated by the ticket officer in the order that they are sold, thus students who purchase their tickets earlier will have seats closer to the front.

Ticket Sale Points and the dates:
Ticket sales will begin on Monday, April 19, between 10:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. at the following places:
- The entrance of FEASS
- The entrance of B-Building
- East Campus-Catering Center
- East Campus-Coffee Break

Concert Dates and Performers:
Thursday, April 29:
Manga (9 p.m.)
Friday, April 30:
Bengü and Murat Boz (8:30 p.m.)

Notes:
1.
“Mobile toilets” will be available at the “Spring Fest” area during the three day period. (From Thursday, April 29 to Saturday, May 1)
2. Pitching tents on the grass will not be allowed because of security and health issues.
3. Pets will not be allowed on the Spring Fest Area.
