The Erasmus Student Network (ESN) was founded in 1989 to support and develop international student exchange. Taking its acronym from the Holland-based Erasmus Exchange Student Network, ESN is one of the biggest interdisciplinary and non-profit international student organizations in Europe. The aim of ESN is to represent international students and to provide opportunities for cultural understanding and self-development.

ESN has 12,000 members from 358 local sections in 34 countries working on a volunteer base. This network is constantly developing and expanding.

ESN Bilkent, which is a branch of Bilkent University, is responsible for those of foreign students who are attending Bilkent University as full-time or exchange students. Thus, the other significant purpose of ESN is acclimating foreign students to life here at Bilkent, in Ankara, and in Turkey in general.

ESN Bilkent is also composed of Turkish students who know the area, who have a good command of English, who are able to devise creative responses to developing situations, and who have an easy-going attitude. Those who want to work for ESN must have a good sense of responsibility, discipline, self-confidence, an open mind, and the ability to freely communicate with students coming from a number of countries.
