Prof. İhsan Doğramacı’s 96th Birthday to be Commemorated
April 3, 2011 marks the 96th anniversary of Prof. İhsan Doğramacı's birth.
This season the Bilkent Symphony Orchestra's traditional April 3rd concert will feature works commemorating the founder of Bilkent University, Prof. İhsan Doğramacı.
The second act of the Saygun Emre opera by composer Yiğit Aydın using Şefik Kahramankaptan's libretto will be premiered at Bilkent University. The Ahmed Adnan Saygun Music Education and Research Center and TEV Turkish Education Foundation commissioned the opera. These two institutions are Ahmed Adnan Saygun's legatees.

Prof. Erdal Arıkan Receives Kadir Has Achievement Award
Prof. Erdal Arıkan, Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, is the recipient of the 7th Kadir Has Award for Distinguished Achievement. The award is given each year to an individual or institution to recognize contributions to science or welfare of society on an international scale. Prof. Arıkan's award citation mentions his breakthrough result in information theory that brought a solution to a fundamental problem that stood open since the field was established by the American mathematician and engineer Claude E. Shannon in 1948.

Prof. Stone Publishes New History of Turkey
Prof. Norman Stone of the International Relations and History Departments has published a new book on the history of Turkey. The book, 192 pages in total and released on March 14, deals with the origins of the Turks to their arrival in Anatolia, the development of the Ottoman Empire, the foundation of the Republic in 1923, and Turkey's most recent years including the European Union accession process.

Evliya Çelebi Celebration a Resounding Success
The commemorative event of the 400th anniversary of Evliya Çelebi's birth took place at Bilkent Concert Hall on the evening of Tuesday, March 22. The program entitled "Evliya Çelebi in Ankara on the Quadricentennial of His Birth" started with a talk titled "Eminent Traveler and Literary Genius Evliya Çelebi," which was delivered to an audience of more than 500 by the prominent Turkologist Prof. Semih Tezcan and was followed by a presentation (with slides) on "Evliya Çelebi's Ankara" by Dr. Nuran Tezcan. Both Tezcans, members of Bilkent's Department of Turkish Literature, are leading Evliya Çelebi experts.

Bilkent Celebrates Library Week
This week, 28 March - 3 April, is the 47th Library Week in Turkey, and to celebrate this event, Bilkent University Library will be hosting a series of cultural and fun activities in the Art Gallery of Main Campus Library. On Tuesday March 29, at 12:30, students from the Faculty of Music and Performing Arts will give a varied concert of music for violin, flute, and guitar, and at 2:30 p.m. on the same day the famous author Turgut Özakman will give a lecture entitled "18 Mart 1915: Diriliş" (in Turkish). On Wednesday March 30, Bilkent's own poet laureate, Prof. Dr. Talat Halman, dean of humanities, will deliver a talk entitled "Libraries and Libertines: Turkish Love Poetry for Library Week" (in both Turkish and English).
