Rector Atalar Joins Twitter
Rector Prof. Abdullah Atalar has joined Twitter. On his profile page, accessed at www.twitter.com/aatalar, Prof. Atalar shares information in Turkish regarding events and news concerning the university, as well as about current global happenings. Prof. Atalar has also responded to messages coming from students and alumni using his new Twitter account.
For those unfamiliar, Twitter is a popular social networking and microblogging website. It offers a virtual medium used by millions to communicate, stay in touch and share information through what are called tweets, text-based posts limited to 140 characters.
Since its inception in the summer of 2006, Twitter use and users have been notably diverse. Twitter has proved to be particularly effective in news reporting and in sharing of information in cases of emergency. Prof. Atalar's first tweet, somewhat in proof of this, came during the snow storm of the week before, informing students and instructors about class cancellations.
