Dr. Phyllis Erdoğan Publishes First Book about Bilkent
Dr. Phyllis Erdoğan, founding library director and currently a vice president of Bilkent University, has published a book on the Bilkent University Library and the first twenty years of its history. Titled Bir Kütüphanenin Hikayesi: Bilkent Üniversitesi Kütüphanesinin İlk Yirmi Yılı 1986-2005 (The Story of a Library: The First Twenty Years of Bilkent University Library 1986-2005), Erdoğan's book is the first book to appear about Bilkent University.
Telling first the story of the creation and development of the Bilkent Library in the context of Turkish higher education's progress during the republic period, Erdoğan goes on to shed light on the organization of the library. She focuses on its buildings, its administrative structure and staff, and its collection. Before concluding her investigation with an assessment of the place of the library within the university, Erdoğan discusses the ways in which Bilkent Library brought change, improvements, and new practices to Turkish librarianship. Appendices provide the names of everyone who worked in the library full time during those 20 years as well as the names of librarianship students who worked part time or did their student practice at Bilkent.
The book is available from the Bilkent Bookstore.
