EX LIBRIS: News from the Library
This week, the Library will launch a new project dedicated to the work of the American philosopher and educational psychologist John Dewey and other thinkers in the Pragmatic tradition. The Bilkent Dewey Project was first proposed by Dr. Kory Sorrell, assistant professor in the Program in Cultures, Civilizations and Ideas, and has been generously supported by the Center for Dewey Studies at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, USA. The Project is housed in the Official Publications Room in the basement floor of A-Block, Main Campus Library, and currently comprises the complete collected works of John Dewey as well as a number of relevant secondary works. Online access to Dewey's collected works, correspondence, and lectures is also available at Bilkent Library and campus-wide. The collection will be expanded overtime and will include books in Turkish; and, the translation of John Dewey's work into Turkish will also be undertaken. The books in this collection cannot be borrowed but can be consulted in the Official Publications Room by Bilkent University faculty and students, as well as visiting scholars, between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. (Monday to Friday) by appointment. On Wednesday, November 10, at 12:40 p.m., Prof. Sübidey Togan (ECON) will deliver the second Library Lunchtime Lecture for this semester, entitled "Is Accession to the EU Necessary for Turkey?" Starting with a pessimistic view of the likelihood of Turkish accession to the European Union in the near future, Prof. Togan will therefore ask whether Turkey should press for membership of the EU at all. He will describe the principles of sound economic policy, and will then outline and assess alternatives to full EU membership, including "Privileged Partnership." As usual, lunchtime refreshments will be supplied. The Library expects that this will be a popular lecture, so please come early to be sure of a seat and a sandwich!
