Prof. Halman's Rumi Book Published
Faculty of Humanities and Letters Dean Talat Halman's book on Mevlana Celaleddin Rumi and the Whirling Dervishes, "Love Is All," has just been published by Bilkent Kültür Girişimi. The book consists of a discussion of Rumi's mysticism and humanitarian ideals; his biography; and dozens of his poems, from his magnum opus "Mesnevi" (the 26,000 couplet masterpiece of Sufi poetry), his "Divan" (collection of love poems) and his "Rubaiyyat" (quatrains), in English translation. The book is profusely illustrated. Some of the photographs are by the celebrated photographer Ara Güler. Numerous original miniature paintings, frontispieces and other visuals from the Mevlevi tradition appear reproduced in their authentic colors.
The majority of the Mevlana poems in the book were translated into English in meter and rhyme by Talat Halman, with others done by such famous translators as Reynold Nicholson and A. J. Arberry. The bibliography includes several dozen important books in English on Rumi and Mevlevi culture.
“Love Is All” aims to serve as a guide for appreciation of the quintessence of the Sufi thought and humanistic values of Mevlana Celaleddin Rumi.
