Professor Orhan Güvenen, chairman of the Department of Accounting Information Systems, gave a seminar titled "World Dynamics, Strategies of Turkey and Decision Systems" on December 15.

Prof. Güvenen, invited by the Siyaset Platformu Kulübü to give a seminar, is a prominent scholar specializing in the fields of economies and strategic research. Besides being the founder and director of the Institute of World Systems, Economies and Strategic Research, he was also appointed by the UNESCO Director General as a member of the governing board of the UNESCO Institute for Statistics (UIS) in 2005.

In his talk, Prof. Güvenen outlined the role of information systems in today's world and the consequences of information pollution and the destruction of information. While stressing the importance of such systems in the decision-making process insofar as they contribute to scientific and technological developments, he pointed out how easily accessed, unverified information may bring about disastrous results at the national and global levels.

In a historical context, Prof. Güvenen discussed the gradual developments in the fields of science and industry with reference to the way they are reflected in the modern world. He stated that, thanks to the widespread use of the Internet, social networks have a facilitating effect on the organization of political and social movements. He concluded that today's information systems, which prepare the way for the spread of information -- no matter if it is scientific or not -- require cautious behavior.
