One of Bilkent University's zenith moments of the year was a visit by Mr. Mehmet Şimşek,
State Minister in charge of Economic Affairs, to speak at a conference organized by the
Management and Economics Club (MEC). Bilkenters were quite enthusiastic about hearing Mr.
Şimşek as the auditorium was packed.
Minister Şimşek is the chief of the Turkish Economy, and one of the newest and youngest
ministers in the current cabinet. He earned his B.A in economics from Mülkiye, Ankara
University’s School of Political Sciences; Master's Degree from the University of Exeter
on state scholarship; followed by years in global finance, including being Merrill Lynch's
Regional Director for Europe and Asia.(continues)

Election Campaign
Continues in Departments
A total of 131 candidates for Department Representatives will
campaign in their departments until November 9.
Get to know the candidates before voting! Visit www.bilkent.edu.tr/
konsey for photographs, names and the departments the candidates are hoping
to represent.
The first round of elections for Department Representatives will be carried out on Tuesday,
November 13. If voter turn out is less than 50 percent, then a second and third
round of elections will be held Wednesday, November 14 and Thursday,
November 15.

Researcher Receives Award from Feyzi Akkaya Research Fund
Assistant Prof. Dr. Uygar Tazebay of
the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics, has received the Feyzi Akkaya Research
Fund for Scientific Activities (FABED) '2007 Distinguished Young Scientist Research
Support Award'. This will help support Dr. Tazebay's "Functional Analysis of a
Recently Identified Human Gene (Hanein-1) in Cell Culture and Trangenic Mouse Models"
research project.
The fund was established in memory of Feyzi Akkaya - one of the innovative pioneer civil
engineers; and a co-founder of Turkey's first international civil engineering company,
STFA. To support and reward distinguished scientific activities, and outstanding young
scientists and researchers in the fields of natural sciences and civil engineering, FABED
has developed 'Outstanding Achievement Awards for Young Scientists', and a 'Research
Support for Outstanding Young Scientists' program.
