Theater Students to Perform Sartre

Faculty of Music and Performing Arts Department of Theater students will perform Jean-Paul Sartre's play "The Respectful Prostitute" (Saygılı Yosma) on March 11 and 12.

"The Respectful Prostitute," written (in French) in 1946, observes a woman, a prostitute, caught up in a racially tense period of American history. The audience understands that there has been an incident on a train involving the woman, and also a black man, who is blamed by the prejudiced law enforcement officials. What the viewers come to realize is that a white man instigated an attack, but it is in the interests of the law to preserve his future as a white person at the expense of the black "devil."

The tale takes a brief look at the loss of freedom inside a cruel world, a subject that dominates Sartre's literary career.

The performances will be in Turkish and will take place in the Bilkent Theater Hall on March 11 and 12 at 8 p.m. Admission is free. For reservations, dial ext. 1775. The entire Bilkent University community is invited to attend.
