King of Jordan to Receive Honorary Doctorate

His Majesty King Abdullah bin al-Hussein, King of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, will be presented with an honorary doctorate by Bilkent University during a ceremony at the Concert Hall on March 7 at 5 p.m.

His Majesty assumed power as the constitutional leader of his country on February 7, 1999, the day his father, the late King Hussein, passed away. King Abdullah II received the first part of his education at the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst in the United Kingdom, and then attended Oxford University in 1984 to study International Politics and World Affairs. King Abdullah II also has an M.Sc. from the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University in Washington...

"From Dissident to President," a Photo Exhibition by Skacha

An exhibition of photos featuring Vaclav Havel, the president of the Czech Republic, in informal settings will be presented by Oldrich Skacha starting on March 21 in the library. The majority of the photos date back to the 1970s, the most difficult period of Vaclav Havel's (and all free-minded citizens of his country) life, the time of Charta 77, a manifesto against oppression and the violation of human rights. Skacha's photos show that even under the most stressful circumstances Havel and other dissidents shared a great sense of humor, enjoyed each other's company, and experienced all the joys of life that the regime was unable to take away from them...

Ambassadors to Meet at Bilkent

panel discussion involving three ambassadors will take place in the FEASS C-Block Auditorium on March 8 from 11.00 a.m. to 1 p.m. The topic of the discussion will be " Spain, Portugal and Greece Before and After EU." The ambassadors taking part will be Jesus Atienza, the ambassador of Spain, Jose Stichini Vilela, the ambassador of Portugal, and Ioannis Korantis, the ambassador of Greece...

Change at the Helm of the Faculty of Music and Performing Arts

There has been a change in the administration of the Faculty of Music and Performing Arts (FMPA) of Bilkent University. Prof. Ersin Onay, who has served as the Dean of the FMPA for the last 12 years, will be leaving his post. Namık Sultanov, who is also a member of the FMPA, will serve as the acting dean until a new appointment is made for the position.

A deanship at the university is a 3-year position renewable upon approval of the Board of Trustees. After a distinguished service of four 3-year terms, Prof. Ersin Onay has expressed a desire to focus on his duties as a professor at the FMPA. The university administration has agreed to his wishes and has expressed its appreciation for the outstanding accomplishments of the faculty under his leadership...

Music and Poetry Meet on Campus

Prof. Filiz Ali, who is the head of the Musicology Department at Mimar Sinan University in İstanbul, visited Bilkent last week to give a speech on the history of music and the use of poetry as lyrics. Prof. Ali provided examples of music pieces throughout history to demonstrate how music and poetry gradually came together.

Filiz Ali first became interested in the intellectual side of music when she was a young student at Ankara State Conservatory. Later, she discovered Renaissance and Middle Age music while studying in the U.S. Filiz Ali went on to produce radio programs on music for many years in Ankara, and wrote newspaper articles, which she subsequently collected together for publication. She later returned to school to continue her education at King's College in England and received a degree in musicology...
