Turkey’s First Invited Review Paper in the Journal Science
Bilkent University Nanotechnology Research Center director Prof. Dr.
Ekmel Özbay has recently published an invited review paper in Science,
the weekly journal of the American Association for the Advancement of
Science. Science has a large and diverse readership all over the world,
and is generally considered the preeminent scientific journal by scholars
in all fields of science. In addition to approximately 100 regular
contributed papers, the journal publishes a single invited review paper in
each issue. The invited review articles are requested from prominent
researchers in selected research areas, in order to provide new
interpretations and directions for Science's readers. (Continued)
 

Prof. Talat Halman's "Nightingales and Pleasure Gardens" Receives Major
U.S. Award

"Nightingales and Pleasure Gardens: Turkish Love Poems," translated and edited by Dr. Talat S. Halman, Chair of the Department of Turkish Literature, has been named one of the top ten university press books for 2005 by ForeWord Magazine, an American review publication. The first anthology of Turkish love poetry in English, the book contains poems written over a period of almost fifteen centuries.

The ForeWord commendation states: "Presenting poetry in translation calls for courage: technical difficulties can overwhelm. The translations simply have to 'work,' and Halman's do. Some sixty poets, from Aprin Çor Tigin to contemporaries appear, each with an identifying note.... The book offers not only the delights of Turkish poetry, but also a cultural education."

There are over 120 university presses in the United States that publish a total of approximately 12,000 titles annually. To be selected as one of the top ten from this field of publications is an impressive honor.


Bilkent Loses Kamuran Gündemir

Prof. Kamuran Gündemir, (piano professor at the Faculty of Music and
Performing Arts and Hacettepe University Ankara State Conservatory) passed away on February 4, 2006. Prof. Gündemir is well known as the teacher of such young piano masters as Fazıl Say, Muhittin Dürrüoğlu Demiriz and Emre Elivar.

Nazım Hikmet’s “Herşeye Rağmen” on Stage

Students in the Department of Theater are staging several more performances of Nazım Hikmet's "Herşeye Rağmen," their graduation play, following successful performances last semester. Generally considered the first and foremost modern Turkish poet, Nazım Hikmet is also known around the world as one of the greatest poets of the twentieth century; his works have been translated into more than fifty languages.

Under the general art direction of Prof. Cüneyt Gökçer, the play is directed by Zurab Sikharulidze. Performances will take place on February 17 and March 3, 10, 17 and 24, at 8 p.m., at the FMPA Theater Hall. (Continued)

Bilkent Delegates Participate in MUN-TR 2006 in Ankara

The Model United Nations-Turkey (MUN-TR) 2006 Conference took place in the Ankara Sheraton Hotel February 7-10, attended by over 150 student delegates from from all over the world. The students came from 13 universities in Turkey and 5 in other countries, as well as 2 high schools. Guest speakers at the conference included former President of the Republic of Turkey Süleyman Demirel, former Ambassador Umut Arık and international law expert Harry Tzimitraz, giving delegates the chance to listen to and exchange ideas with top names in the field of international relations.

The event was organized with the cooperation of the Foreign Ministry,
the United Nations Ankara office, the Greater Ankara Municipality and
the MUN-TR organization team. The official sponsor of the conference from
Bilkent was the Bilkent Diplomacy and International Relations Club.

During a model United Nations conference, students enact a UN session
at which they debate and negotiate international issues as "representatives" of the nations of the world. At MUN-TR 2006, the 20 delegates from Bilkent represented countries as diverse as Cuba and Israel. (Continued)
