TRIN Students Participate in the Translation Studies Student Congress
On Wednesday, April 20, TRIN students, İmge Aktaş, Fatih Kocaman, and Burak Otluoğlu and TRIN graduate Serkan Daşar participated in the First Ankara Translation Studies Student Congress organized by Çankaya University.
The Congress consisted of three ninety-minute sessions and two panels. İmge Aktaş served as chair of the first session, which featured papers by Gizem Şimşeksoy of Çankaya University and Hakan Karadeniz of Hacettepe University. In the second session, Burak Otluoğlu presented a paper entitled "An Audio Description (AD) Project," a final project he completed for TRIN 340, Audio-Visual Media Translation. Since AD, which " involves the accessibility of the visual images of theater and other art forms for people who are blind or visually impaired” (http://www.artsaccessinc.org/definition.html) is a fairly new phenomenon in Turkey, Burak's project, the AD of Firat Mançuhan's award-winning short Turkish film Sapak received a lot of attention.
After Burak, Fatih Kocaman talked about "Problems Encountered While Translating Children's Literature from English and French into Turkish," which was based on a study done of various children's books translated by instructors at the School of Applied Languages.
The third session was chaired by Zeynep Çetiner of Hacettepe University and included papers by Zeren Görkem Gürsoy of Hacettepe University and Rüya Karagöz and Mert Kağan Ekinci of Atılım University.
The final session included a panel on "The Future of the Translation Profession in Turkey" with Özlem Üstün Kaval, head of the Translation Coordination Department of the European Union General Secretariat, Bilkent University TRIN graduate Serkan Daşar of Nova Translation Services, and Petek Demir, literary translator.
