BELS Celebrates Pi Day
Each March 14, "Pi Day" is observed to celebrate the mathematical constant pi. Written in the month/day format used in the United States, the date of the celebration -- 3/14 -- resembles the first three digits of pi: 3.14. (It also happens to be the date on which Albert Einstein was born.)
The earliest Pi Day was held at the San Francisco Exploratorium in 1988. Since then, the celebration has spread throughout the world, especially within the educational community. At the Bilkent Erzurum Laboratory School (BELS), Pi Day has become a tradition, serving to give students more information about this, the most popularly known mathematical constant, and increase their enthusiasm for mathematics in general.
This year's Pi Day activities took place on March 14 in the BELS multipurpose room. The program started with videos about math and continued with a "Pi Presentation," "A Poem on Mathematics" and a quiz show, all of which were organized by students. Students from all levels, as well as teachers and administrators, participated in the day's activities.
