Bilkent Celebrates Library Week

Photograph by M. Furkan Akıncı (LAW/III)

Every year, during the last week of March, Turkey celebrates Library Week to recognize the important role of libraries and librarians in our daily and professional lives. This year, to mark Library Week, Bilkent Library held a number of cultural and fun activities open to all members of the university community.

These began last Monday, with a beautiful mini-concert performed by students from FMPA. On Wednesday the Library welcomed Bilkent students and faculty as well as young students from Özel Bilkent Lisesi and T.C. Emlak Bankası İlköğretim Okulu for an hour-long communal book reading get-together. Rainy weather meant that the reading session was moved indoors to the Main Campus Library Art Gallery, but that did not dampen the literary spirits of the participants! Unfortunately, the planned presentation by Turkish poet and Bilkent faculty member Hilmi Yavuz had to be postponed due to unforeseen circumstances, but will hopefully be rescheduled for some time in April. Please watch for future announcements.

Finally, the library received many excellent submissions for the poetry competition. The best three entries will be announced this week, and the rector, Prof. Abdullah Atalar, will participate in the prize-giving ceremony on Wednesday, April 3.

Also this week, the Library will start hosting a new series of seminars entitled "Notes from Nature: Science and Technology Worldview," to be given by Dr. Mecit Yaman, advisor at the Ministry of Science, Industry and Technology. In these seminars, Dr. Yaman will survey the world science and technology scene along with its social context as a complete whole.

His remarks will be based on the weekly issues of the journal Nature, covering editorials, opinions, news, analysis and technical research articles. The presentations will take place in the Art Gallery of Main Campus Library at 12:40 p.m. on the following days: April 3, April 17, May 8 and May 22. Each individual seminar will be announced separately.
