Three new administrative appointments mark the beginning of the 2010 fall semester. Assoc. Prof. Hatice Pınar Bilgin has been appointed chair of the Department of International Relations, Asst. Prof. Ahmet Gürata has been appointed acting chair of the Department of Communication and Design, and Prof. Mustafa Çelebi Pınar has been appointed assistant dean of the Faculty of Engineering.

Hatice Pınar Bilgin graduated in 2000 with a Ph.D. in International Politics from the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, UK. She holds an M.Sc. in Strategic Studies from the same school, and an M.A. in International Relations from Bilkent University, where she has worked since 2000. The UK Political Studies Association awarded her the “Best Article Published in Politics in 2004,” co-authored with Dr. Adam David Morton. She is the author of Regional Security in the Middle East: A Critical Perspective (Routledge, 2005) and associate editor of Security Dialogue. Her research interests include critical approaches to security with a specific focus on security in the developing world. Bilgin has been awarded the TÜBA GEBİP Award for 2008 and TÜBİTAK Incentive Award for 2009. Assoc. Prof. Hatice Pınar Bilgin has taken over the position of chair from Assoc. Prof. Ersel Aydınlı, who chaired the department from 2007 to 2010.

Asst. Prof. Ahmet Gürata joined the Department of Communication and Design in 2007. He holds a M.A. from Bilkent University and a Ph.D. from the London Consortium (University of London). He teaches courses in film history and theory. Gürata has published research on the history of Turkish cinema, cross-cultural reception, remakes and documentary in anthologies and journals. Gürata replaces Asst. Prof. Andreas Treske, who chaired the department from 2006 to 2010.

Professor at the Department of Industrial Engineering, Mustafa Çelebi Pınar holds a B.Sc. in Industrial Engineering from Boğaziçi University, an M.Sc. and a Ph.D. from University of Pennsylvania (1989 and 1992). Pınar joined Bilkent University in 1994 after completing his post-doc at the Technical University of Denmark (Department of Numerical Analysis). His research interests include optimization applied to finance and telecom. Pınar has spent the year 2007-2008 at Princeton University as a Fulbright scholar at the Department of Operations Research and Financial Engineering.
