As this is my first article for the Bilkent News, I should let you know that if you enjoy the art of cinema, if you like traveling, and if you love to explore good food, you should watch this column each week. And what would be a better place to start than having a sneak peek into some of the significant upcoming movies?
This year’s upcoming horror movies will certainly stir up your inner claustrophobia: Buried is about a soldier in Iraq, portrayed by Ryan Reynolds (Blade: Trinity, Smokin’ Aces, The Proposal), who wakes up to find himself buried alive in a coffin. It has a very high viewer rating with a score of 9/10 in imdb.com. It is scheduled for release in October. And you will certainly not want to take the elevator after seeing Devil. This second claustrophobic horror movie, released September 17th, is about a group of people who are stuck in an elevator in a skyscraper. Every time the lights go out, something gruesome happens. It is written by M. Night Shyamalan, an expert on human fears. Saw 3D arrives October 22nd to scare us to death with three dimensional vividness. This will be the seventh and final movie of the Saw saga that is featured in the Guinness book of records as the most successful horror movie series of all time.
Looking at the trailers, Due Date, to be released December 3rd, seems like it will be the best comedy of this year. It features Robert Downey, Jr. as an unfortunate man stuck in a road trip with Zach Galifianakis from The Hangover. Other upcoming comedies, such as Dinner for Schmucks, with Steve Carell and Paul Rudd, and The Other Guys, with Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg, seem to be mediocre. There will also be a parody of the Twilight saga titled Vampires Suck. The trailer is really hilarious, but I doubt there is much else in the movie than what’s in the trailer.
The Social Network tells us about the troublesome creation of Facebook by a Harvard student. It is to be released October 29th and will be directed by the talented David Fincher, known for masterpieces such as Fight Club, Se7en and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, so this will definitely be a must-see. The movie also features Justin Timberlake.
Eat Pray Love, featuring the beautiful Julia Roberts and the charming Javier Bardem, is about a woman who abandons her husband and career to find herself as she travels around Italy, India, and Bali. It is to be released October 1st. Fans of the novel claim the movie was not able to capture the spirit of the book; however, everyone seems to agree that the cinematography is breathtaking.
Machete, a violent action movie, is now featured at the movies and is directed by Robert Rodriguez, who is famous for movies such as Sin City, The Faculty, Once Upon a Time in Mexico, and From Dusk Till Dawn. Robert De Niro, Jessica Alba, Michelle Rodriguez (Lost, Avatar), and Danny Trejo (Grindhouse) make up a rich cast, and you will certainly enjoy this movie if you like the style of Tarantino.
Another action movie, The American, featuring George Clooney, may seem interesting but reviewers say it is very slow and boring.
Other significant upcoming movies are Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, featuring Michael Douglas and Shia LaBeouf (Transformers), and Burlesque, a dazzling musical featuring the two golden-voiced divas, Cher and Christina Aguilera. Also, the long-awaited Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I arrives November 17th; The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader arrives December 10th; and TRON: Legacy arrives January 28th in 3D.
