From the Library

Bilkent University Library would like to welcome the Bilkent community to the new semester. While you have all been enjoying your vacations, the Library has been working hard to improve its services for our users, and we will describe some changes here.

First, the Library now has a new catalog that incorporates many new features designed to help you find books and other items more easily and quickly. For example, search results are now more visual, with book covers and item-type icons, and you can read a short summary of the book and view a table of contents. You may also continue your search outside the catalog, for example in Google Scholar. The system allows you to create research bibliographies and to receive alerts when new books on a particular subject or by your favorite authors are added to our collection. Furthermore, you are able to submit material requests and Inter-Library Loan requests from within the catalog. Online demos of the main features of the new catalog will be available shortly. To access the catalog, please follow the link on our website or go directly to:

We welcome any comments and suggestions from our users.

As those of you who have visited the main campus library recently will already know, new security gates have been installed at the entrance of Library. These new gates are designed to monitor access to the Library more effectively and provide better statistics about library usage. As before, entry will be on the right-hand side as you approach from the outside, and the exit will be on the left. In order to enter the building, all Bilkent members must scan their Bilkent ID card and this will automatically open the gate. Bilkent family members who do not have a Bilkent ID card can apply for an individual library card at the Circulation desk and this will also work the gate. Non-Bilkent “outside” readers can apply for a daily-card at a special kiosk in the entrance foyer. The exit is open, but it is alarmed and will check for books and other items that have not been borrowed. Please do not try to enter the Library via the exit, as this will also set off the alarm. In case of any problems, a member of the university's security will be at the desk to help.

We would also like to inform you of this semester's Library Lunchtime Lectures. Our first lecture will take place on Thursday 14 October 2010 and will be given by Dr. Ahmet Gürata, chair of the Department of Communication and Design. In November, Prof. Sübidey Togan from Economics will talk about Turkish accession to the EU, and in December there will be a lecture by two of our previous speakers, Prof. Tayfun Özçelik (MBG) and Dr. Emre Özgen (PSY), about their joint project on quadrupedal gait in families from eastern Anatolia. More information will be given about all these lectures nearer the time.
Bilkent University Library would like to wish you all a very pleasant and productive Fall 2010-2011!
